Stokes Castle ~ Austin Nevada

We travel Hwy 50 regularly on our way to Ely.  We faithfully stop in Austin, since it is a halfway point.  My youngest son always asks to hike up to Stokes Castle and we never take the time.  This most recent Christmas was almost no exception; it was dusk and the temperature was really dropping, but we decided to go anyway.  We couldn’t have timed it any better.  On top of that hill we admired one of Nevada’s Historic places and caught a fantastic sunset over the entire valley.  It is a nice little worthwhile hike!

Hike Through the Donner Abandoned Train Tunnels

The Donner Pass Summit Tunnel is a historic and one of a kind hike; you will be walking through an abandoned railroad tunnel.  Don’t forget your flashlight, your good shoes and some extra company!  For more information, visit: Train Tunnels

There is a fair amount of water that gets into the tunnels, so wear the right shoes.  In the winter, the water turns into ice.  It can be really slick in spots, so be cautious.
